Tanzania 2009 July 2009, in celebration of turning fifty, and living with Diabetes for 38years, I will be traveling to Africa to the remote village of Indolejeje on the outskirts of Shinyanga, Tanzania. I will be visiting Fr. Donald Sybertz, a native of North Weymouth Massachusetts. Father Donny has been working in Tanzania for the past 53 years as a Maryknoll Missionary. My first memory of Fr. Donny is when I was eight years old and I promised I would come to Tanzania to help him with his work. At the age of twelve I was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. Fulfilling my promise to Fr. Donny was discouraged due to the conditions in Tanzania. However, thirty-eight years of living with Diabetes, after sleeping in a snow hut in Alaska, having enjoyed 22 years of marriage, giving birth to two beautiful children and enjoying a wonderful career in education, I consider myself very fortunate. In my thirty-eight years I have lost wonderful friends and witnessed lives that have been devastated by Diabetes. In their honor and in celebration of my good fortune, I am taking on this new challenge. In Tanzania, only one in five children developing type 1 Diabetes is diagnosed, leaving many undiagnosed children to die before they even receive any help. This is a great tragedy, as cost effective simple measures for diagnosis are available. (World Diabetes Association) My hope is to bring glucose meters, test strips and educational materials to this remote village so that Fr. Donny’s community can learn the early warning signs of Diabetes. My goal is simple and frugal in these tough economic times. With so many friends and family who volunteer their time, energy and money to so many wonderful causes, I am appealing to the many communities I have been a part of throughout my 50 years. I am asking for a small donation to honor those who have in some way been touched by Diabetes. Please contribute $1.00 for every person you know who has been affected by Diabetes and I will carry the list of names with me throughout my journey. Every dollar counts, just as every carbohydrate counts… (A little Diabetic humor) No donation is too small. Each dollar is representative of a human life helping another human life.
