1908 ~ Celebrating 100 Years ~ 2008

Dear Friends,

The community of Gwinn and its surrounding areas has begun planning the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of Gwinn and the first graduating class of Gwinn High School.

The ten day celebration period will begin on July 3rd and run through July 13th, 2008. Financial, Alumni, and Event sub-committees have been formed to focus on fundraising, contacting former students, faculty, and attendees of Gwinn High School, and the planning of events for the ten day celebration.

Tentative plans for the July festivities include rolling the annual Lions Chicken Barbecue and the Community Fun-Daze events into that time frame from their normal dates in late June and late July. These events will combine with Fourth of July activities, including a pre-Fourth of July street dance on July third, parade on July 5th that will include a fly-over by a B-52, the Lions Chicken Barbecue, ice cream social, car show, a grand ball on July 11th, and possibly individual class reunions. An ecumenical church service is also tentatively scheduled on both Sundays in the park during this week. Other events and activities are being discussed. Details will be released as plans are confirmed.

While the centennial is linked to the birth of the town of Gwinn and its historic role in solidifying the entire region as one community made from many small communities, we recognize that this date is also symbolic to all those surrounding towns and villages which make up Forsyth Township. We encourage everyone from throughout the township to join together to make this a wonderful and memorable community birthday party.

There are two pressing needs facing the centennial efforts at this time. First is gathering lists of alumni/attendee addresses so that as many former alumni can be contacted in time for them to make arrangements to attend, and the second most pressing need is to gather enough money to bring the dreams of this celebration to reality. We are in immediate need of startup funds to get us off the ground. A donation of $5.00, (or more if you wish!), would assist us greatly. You can send a check or money order payable to "The 2008 Gwinn Area Centennial Committee" at PO Box 365, Gwinn, MI 49841.

We are hopeful that all of you receiving this notice will spread the word to others you think would be interested in attending in 2008 or assisting our efforts. Please pass the word along to fellow alumni or http://www.gwinn.k12.mi.us/ALUMNI/alumnihome.htm to see if there is anyone on the "unable to locate" list". To contact us about alumni information, please contact Sheri Wills-Curtice at imweege@chartermi.net or Mary Jo Beling-Laken at mlaken@gwinn.k12.mi.us. To contact us about assisting in funding the centennial or help on any committees, contact Jeanette Maki at gwinnchamber@chartermi.net.

Thank you on behalf of the Steering Committee.

Sincerely,

Jeanette Maki, Jim Ghirardi, and Richard Wills
