Additional details As many of you know, there has been an uphill battle for the parents and students of West Campus since August. Many parents continue to fight the injustice of the school board's decision to close WC. For many of them, their motivation is simple. They want to protect their kids well being and future education, and reduce the risk that investments in their homes and neighborhood property will not decrease. For all of us on this email list, West Campus is a source of great pride for the community, and reflects our heritage. When I look at different high school closure studies on the internet and the value that a school has on the community, I can't help but feel that the schools closure was taken without consideration for the value to the students, community, and the local economy. Moreover, I'm convinced that the school board illegally closed WC without due diligence and without foresight for these considerations. For multiple reasons, I have continued to support the parents and students of WC no matter how difficult this challenge might be. Please make no mistake. Reversing the board's decision will be very difficult.

However, there have been several rulings by a Federal judge that resulted in temporary restraining orders on the school board which have begun to expose their contempt.

The legal process is not driven by one family or several. It's a community effort that must unite to make this happen. On Dec. 1, there will be a fund raiser at Camargo Park (see below). They need our help, and I'm asking for your help. I would like to challenge each class of graduates (1977 to 2007) to raise $1000 each, and its quite simple. Fifty (50) students times $20 each. Although every dollar counts, a $1 donation just won't make for a good fight. The community needs to raise about $15,000 fast to make something happen. They need to pressure the school board and superintendent to make a trustworthy decision on behalf of our community, if not for now, then certainly for the future. If the WC community can't make a stand now, its voice will be lost to the greater South San Antonio ISD area forever.

Our reunion alone cost more than $3500 and we had a fantastic time. About 50% of it was gifted by our fellow classmates to keep reunion prices lower. It's these types of gifts that make things happen. Some of our fellow graduating classes haven't had any reunion activities at all, and it's unfortunate. I do feel a sense of lost hope for the most recent graduating classes and its seniors who may feel like they are losing an identity. Maybe it's appropriate that the best graduating class (a little biased) just celebrated its 20 yr reunion at a time when WC needs us the most. In honor of your parent(s), or your favorite teacher, or a friend, or the memory of a fallen classmate, make a gift in their name(s) to the Save West Campus fund. They need your help. Gifts are deductible, and can be sent to:

Make Check Payable to: Save West Campus Fund

Mail to: Save West Campus

Steve Griffin, WC '87
